The home, affectionately referred to as the Green Beginnings House, was awarded the LEED Silver designation from the U.S. Green Building Council, the nations authority on green design and construction. The USGBC's LEED Green Building Rating System is the national benchmark for green design and construction. The Green Beginnings House has also been selected by the USGBC as a LEED Project Profile, one of only eight homes nationwide that serve as examples of the LEED For Homes program on its website and educational materials.
Written in plain, non-technical simple English, our homespun narrative style of storytelling, interjected with valuable lesson boxes, provides for an enjoyable read and meaningful learning experience.
This authors address what the terms green and sustainable mean as they relate to homes, provide a historical overview of where the notion of green homes came from, and explain the criteria for green homes as defined by the USGBC's LEED For Homes program.
We cover builder and architectural contracts, site work, permitting, green and sustainable recycled and reclaimed materials, products, and systems in the order which they were experienced. The actual construction process is presented in a captioned photo essay with over 100 sequentially presented color photographs that showcase what various products and systems look like. A glossary of terms and language are helpful resources that aid comprehension, and our closing "Reflections in Hindsight" point out key items to remain cognizant of when building green.
The book is unique as it provides insight written from the homeowners perspective by a couple who experienced building a green home that ultimately became a published example of the nations benchmark for green homes by the U.S. Green Building Council. | | | Product Details: | | | Author:

A valuable book for anyone interested in going green or building a green homeJan 05, 2009 Going Green is "the Next Big Thing" after the invention of the internet. It is one of the most important trends of this century. "Green Beginnings: The Story of How We Built Our Green & Sustainable Home" is an important contribution to the revolutionary trend of Going Green.
"...Although earliest cultures had built their dwellings with respect to natural world, in modern times little attention had been given to situating homes on sites in relation to nature; that is, to the sun, the prevailing winds, and other natural world elements that had sustained even primitive man for centuries in the most rudimentary of dwellings since the beginning of time...
Another way of introducing you to the concept of sustainable housing and greener living is to understand that up until the present what has been the standard, acceptable way to build housing just wasn't working anymore...
Finally, the economic pressure from our dependence upon fossil fuels as a people has been the single most influential factor in changing the status quote today. Simply stated, we no longer have a choice. The time has come to replace the status quo with alternative solution. And, the time is now." Avrim Topel and Vicki Topel write in "Green Beginnings: The Story of How We Built Our Green & Sustainable Home." They continue to use their real life experience of building a LEED-Silver home to introduce the green buildings to ordinary people in plain and simple English.
"Green Beginnings: The Story of How We Built Our Green & Sustainable Home" include nine chapters: Assembling the Creative Team; Defining Green and Sustainable; The Conceptual Design Plan; Sitework and Permitting; Products, System and Materials; Construction Documents: The Working Drawings; The Construction Process: A Photo Essay; Reflections in Hindsight: Notes from the Interior; and Notes from the Garden.
I particularly like the Chapter of "Reflections in Hindsight." For example, Avrim Topel and Vicki Topel mention their experience of trying to use reclaimed wood, but cannot get structural engineer's stamp of approval on it because there is no grading system for reclaimed wood yet. Another example is Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPS). While they are great products for insulation and preventing mold, they also present challenges for running plumbing lines and electrical conduits within the walls. All these are very valuable lessons learn, and you have the benefits of knowing them in advance if you read this book before building your green home.
"Green Beginnings: The Story of How We Built Our Green & Sustainable Home" has 186 pages, 100 sequenced color photographs, and a glossary of green and sustainable terms and language. It is a valuable book for anyone interested in going green or building a green home.

Extremely HelpfulJan 05, 2009 I read this book over the weekend. This is an extremely helpful book for people how want to start building their own "green" house. The authors thoughtfully went from A to Z on what you need to do and what not to do when considering this daunting task.I recommend this book highly. Finally, Green Home Building is EASY TO UNDERSTAND!Dec 08, 2008 Many thanks to this husband and wife team for sharing their experience. I feel like I went along with them for the journey of a lifetime in designing and building a green and sustainable home. I have to admit, although I've read plenty of magazing and newpaper articles about Green Homes, I've been reluctant to pick up a book on the subject because the only ones I've been able to find are more like complicated technical manuals which admittedly intimidate me.
Green Beginnings seemed more friendly to me since it was written by actual home owners, like me. What a surprise to find out that this HOW TO book reads more like a story... and a fun story at that. I particulary like how they pulled their whole team together and I've already looked up several of their sub contractors and product lines on line for more information. I also appreciated the practical tips offered "in hindsight" and the fact that the basic terms involved in the world of "Green and Sustainable" now make total sense to me for the first time.
Although I'm not quite ready to start building my own Green and Sustainable home, I'm certainly more prepared to start the process of where, when and how I'll go about it when I am ready. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE who is interested in lowering their home and living expenses and I'm going to provide several copies to our local school libraries here in Pennsylvania - not only is this the perfect MUST READ book for anyone considering building a Green and Sustainable home, Green Beginnings should be required reading for all high schoolers since its cleary the way of the future. Hats off (made of natural fibers, of course) to Avrim and Vicki Topel for an easy to read book on a sometimes hard to understand subject matter.
